Crypto’s Big Investor Wave Fizzles as Adoption Stalls
New Urban Institute data show crypto adoption in the U.S. remains tepid: about 17% have ever owned crypto and roughly 9% currently own it, meaning nearly half of past investors have exited. Despite regulatory moves and products like spot Bitcoin ETFs and proposals to include crypto in retirement plans, uptake remains limited as stocks remain far more common and crypto is still seen as volatile and specialized. Demographics skew younger and male, with Asian Americans more likely to own crypto, and many holdings are small; experts call for clearer disclosures while noting ongoing questions about crypto’s portfolio value and its fit in retirement accounts.
