JWST Uncovers Secrets of the Dark Molecular Clouds in the Milky Way's Core
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been used to study a massive cloud of gas called "The Brick" located in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) at the heart of the Milky Way. Despite its density, The Brick shows few signs of star formation, which has puzzled astronomers. Using the JWST's powerful infrared capabilities, researchers have discovered that The Brick contains more carbon monoxide (CO) ice than previously thought. However, the gas inside the cloud is warmer than expected, suggesting that the CO may have frozen out in the denser regions. These findings challenge existing models of star formation and the abundance of CO in the galactic center. Further observations with the JWST may provide more insights into The Brick's low rate of star formation.
