Nighttime Urination: When Frequent Trips to the Bathroom May Signal Prostate Trouble
Frequent nighttime urination, or nocturia, should not be dismissed as just aging; while an enlarged prostate (BPH) can obstruct urine flow and stress the bladder, nocturia has multiple possible causes, including high evening fluid intake, caffeine/alcohol, overactive bladder, urinary infections, diabetes, certain medications, and sleep problems. If this happens regularly, track symptoms (how often, urine amount, stream quality, daytime urgency) and seek evaluation (urine and blood tests, ultrasound, urinary flow assessment, and prostate evaluation) to identify the cause and tailor treatment. See a prostate specialist if you have a weak stream, difficulty starting urination, urgency, dribbling, or a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
