Experimental Pill Tries to Turn Exercise Into a Daily Tablet
Enveda’s ENV-308 is an experimental daily pill designed to mimic some effects of exercise by delivering Lac-Phe to suppress appetite. In a Phase 1 trial with 88 healthy adults, the drug was safe and well tolerated across dose levels, with an “exceptional” gastrointestinal safety profile. Lac-Phe is a natural compound formed when lactate and phenylalanine combine during exercise and can reduce hunger, but it degrades quickly; ENV-308 aims to prolong these effects and potentially complement GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. Animal studies suggest it may preserve lean muscle during weight loss. Next steps include trials to test actual weight and metabolic outcomes and interactions with other therapies. Even if successful, it will take years and FDA approval before it could reach patients, and it won’t replace the benefits of physical activity.
