Ladera Ranch halts landscape chemicals as pediatric cancer spike prompts federal inquiry
Ladera Ranch, a wealthy Southern California community, has seen multiple pediatric cancer diagnoses since 2013, including Ewing sarcoma and a teen’s death from secondary leukemia. In response, LARMAC ordered a 60‑day pause on routine landscape products used for weed management and plant growth regulation in common areas and formed an Ad Hoc Landscape Pest Management Advisory Committee to review the program. First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli has urged the EPA to investigate potential environmental factors, while officials say no causal link has been established; the pause excludes essential public-safety pest control.
