Aging Muscles Trade Power for Protection via Cardiolipin Decline
A University of Copenhagen study reveals that age-related muscle weakness is partly a protective response. As the mitochondrial lipid cardiolipin declines, muscles shift from fast-twitch to slow-twitch fibers to manage oxidative stress. Partially restoring this molecule in mice reversed muscle wasting and prevented premature death, suggesting new therapeutic targets for age-related decline.
