Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Ukraine conflict is “coming to an end” and signaled openness to talks with Europe, naming former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder as his preferred interlocutor; he also said a meeting with Zelenskiy would require a lasting peace, while the Kremlin urged Europe to take the initiative in negotiations.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have exchanged gunfire along their border, with both sides blaming each other for the incident. The fighting comes ahead of EU-hosted talks aimed at resolving their long-standing territorial dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. The region is recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is populated mainly by Armenians. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in two wars over the region, and clashes have broken out regularly since a Russia-negotiated ceasefire deal in 2020.
