Santa Monica Studio confirmed pre-orders for God of War Laufey open on September 29, 2026, ahead of the game’s February 16, 2027, PlayStation 5 launch. The announcement details the Serpent Bow, a new ranged weapon for protagonist Faye, alongside pre-order and Digital Deluxe Edition bonuses. The game follows Faye in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, and introduces a combat system distinct from Kratos’s previous mechanics.
The article argues that Faye’s strength and legacy drive God of War, with Kratos consistently praising her, the supporting cast praising and mourning her, and online backlash framed as misogyny rather than a real critique of the story.*
Santa Monica Studio previews God of War Laufey, a Faye-led adventure told in a parallel ‘Everywhen’ timeline, introducing new traversal and combat styles, and the companions Phranque and Rue, as they discuss the shift from Kratos-centered storytelling, the saga’s future, and addressing fan skepticism about the franchise’s direction.
Sony and Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War Laufey for PlayStation 5, with Faye (voiced by Deborah Ann Woll) as the lead who awakens in the afterlife of the gods, the Everywhen. She’s joined by Phranque, a 'curious cosmic cube' voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian. The game promises familiar GoW combat built on the current system but with increased mobility for Faye, who can fight on the ground and in the air using a sword and magic. The narrative centers on protecting loved ones as Faye uncovers plans from her past in a new adventure. Nearby developments include a remake of the original God of War trilogy, a live-action series in development with Amazon Prime Video, and a reportedly canceled live-service GoW project in 2025.
God of War Laufey retools the series by making Kratos’ wife Faye the lead character, awakening in the gods’ afterlife, Everywhen, to face deities with intimate, brutal combat that blends swordplay and magic. The PS5 game is in development with no release date yet, following a trailer shown at State of Play. An enchanted sword and soul-based combat mechanics are highlighted as key features, and the article also notes Amazon’s live‑action God of War series developments.
Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War: Laufey, a PS5 prequel centered on Kratos’ wife Faye, depicting her life and death before the events of the 2018 reboot and expanding the series’ lore; the announcement came during Sony’s State of Play, and the larger God of War slate now includes a PS5 remake of the original trilogy and an Amazon live-action series.
A rumor suggests a Kratos-free God of War PS5 prequel where Faye (Kratos’ late partner) teams up with Tyr, featuring a gelatinous cube companion and Merlin the talking sword, and spanning mythologies from Mayan to Chinese and Japanese (with Arthurian hints). No official confirmation yet; an April State of Play reveal is possible, while Santa Monica is reportedly remaking the God of War trilogy.
