Paris’s 400-year-old Enfants Rouges market destroyed in overnight fire
A massive fire destroyed the Marché des Enfants Rouges, Paris’s oldest covered food market, early Monday morning. The blaze, which started at 3:00 a.m., gutted the 17th-century structure and its 17 stalls, leaving no survivors of the historic iron and glass roof. While 150 firefighters contained the fire to prevent it spreading to neighboring buildings, the cause remains unknown. Officials promised reconstruction, but traders and residents expressed deep shock over the loss of a cultural landmark.
