Leonardo’s Heart Sketch Unlocks New Insights Into Heart Disease Risk
Scientists have linked the heart’s inner trabeculae, sketched by Leonardo da Vinci, to adult heart function and cardiovascular disease risk. Using fractal analysis, MRI data, and UK Biobank data from nearly 18,100 participants, researchers showed trabeculae shape affects cardiac performance and identified 16 genetic loci related to their development, suggesting embryonic origins influence disease risk and could inform clinical understanding.
