Himalayan Warming Fuels Unprecedented Cascading Hazards Beyond Adaptation

World Weather Attribution links the Aug. 26, 2026 Langtang Lirung rock–ice avalanche and downstream debris flood in Nepal to rapid Himalayan warming that boosted meltwater, permafrost degradation, and the snow-to-rain transition, driving a hazard magnitude beyond current adaptation. The flood surged ~188 km/h over 200 km to Rasuwagadhi, leaving 1,300+ dead, thousands missing, tens of thousands displaced, and tens of millions of cubic meters of sediment deposited along the valley. While Nepal’s early warning systems helped reduce losses from conventional riverine floods, the event exceeded existing risk-reduction capacities, underscoring the need for a rapid fossil-fuel transition, climate finance for adaptation, and strengthened cross-border hazard monitoring in high mountains.

Ancient Supereruptions Unearthed: Catastrophic Events in Europe Every 10,000-15,000 Years

Scientists have discovered "megabeds" at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, indicating a cycle of catastrophic events caused by ancient supervolcano eruptions that occur every 10,000 to 15,000 years. These megabeds, formed by volcanic material, were found near the coast of Italy and are separated by distinct layers of sediments. The oldest megabed formed after a massive eruption from the Campi Flegrei supervolcano 39,000 years ago, while the youngest was deposited by a less energetic eruption. The findings will help researchers better understand the risk posed by volcanoes in the region.
