Ubuntu 26.10 will switch the default D-Bus implementation to the high-performance Dbus-Broker, moving dbus-broker into main and enabling it by default while shifting D-Bus components to universe. The change aims for better performance, reliability, and scalability, though GNOME/GDM dependencies and AppArmor/Snaps considerations helped shape the rollout; the move aligns Ubuntu with Fedora’s historical switch and comes as a Rust-based BUS1 IPC approach gains attention.
GNOME 51 could replace the GNOME System Monitor with the GNOME Resources app, which adds features like NPU and GPU power monitoring and broader device support. Ubuntu has already switched to Resources. The Resources project, now hosted by GNOME.org GitLab after being incubator-hosted and previously on GitHub, is moving toward promotion as the core monitor in GNOME 51, with a merge request underway to swap org.gnome.SystemMonitor for org.gnome.Resources. GNOME has opened merge requests to drop X.Org (X11) session support, making it a Wayland-only desktop environment. The move aligns with Fedora's plan to disable GNOME X11 session support and make KDE Plasma 6 Wayland-only. The merge requests aim to remove X11 session targets and eventually eliminate the X11 session code, reducing gnome-session's codebase by 3.6k lines. Concerns have been raised about the impact on downstream desktops that haven't fully transitioned to Wayland, but it appears that GNOME will become Wayland-only in 2024.
A merge request for GNOME's Mutter compositor aims to improve performance for NVIDIA proprietary driver multi-monitor setups by adding hardware acceleration for secondary GPUs. The Steam client beta for Linux now recognizes the global scaling factor for text sizing set by KDE, GNOME, and other desktops. The update also includes a fallback mechanism for computing the window scaling factor and a command-line switch for force-overriding the Steam client UI scaling.
