"Chinese Lab Engineers Mutant Ebola with Severe Symptoms"

Chinese scientists at Hebei Medical University have engineered a virus using parts of Ebola to study its symptoms, resulting in the death of hamsters within three days. The study aimed to find animal models that mimic Ebola symptoms safely in a lab setting, using a less dangerous virus engineered to carry Ebola's glycoprotein. The research provides a method for preclinical evaluation of medical countermeasures against Ebola under less stringent biosafety conditions.

Nasal spray COVID vaccine proves effective in boosting immunity.

A new study has shown promising results for a live attenuated nasal COVID-19 vaccine, which provides superior protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to intramuscularly applied vaccines. The vaccine works by stopping the virus in the upper airway before it can travel further into the body. The study was conducted on hamsters, which showed a stronger immune response compared to the vaccines that are currently available. The nasal vaccine could be a game changer in controlling SARS-CoV-2 transmission, as it activates immunity right where it's needed. Clinical trials are ongoing, and questions remain about the vaccine's safety for people with weakened immune systems and the potential risk of combining it with different variants of the virus.

Pets may reduce children's risk of food allergies, study shows.

Infants exposed to cats or pet dogs were 13 to 16% less likely to develop food allergies than those raised in pet-free homes, according to a study in Japan. Exposure to dogs appeared to reduce the risk of egg, milk and nut allergies, while exposure to cats appeared to reduce the risk of egg, wheat and soybean allergies. However, children exposed to hamsters had a 93% greater chance of developing nut allergies than children from pet-free homes. The exact mechanism of how this happens is unclear, but some researchers believe it has to do with the way that pet exposure might strengthen an infant’s gut microbiome.
