Actor Isaiah Washington publicly revealed on social media that his wife, Jenise Maria Garland, died in June 2025 after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke. The disclosure, made 16 months after her passing, highlights the sudden nature of her collapse and death, prompting Washington to urge the public to take severe headaches seriously and seek medical scans. A healthy 42-year-old Michigan mom, Nichole Vallette, woke with a thunderclap headache and nausea and then suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation (AVM). She underwent emergency brain surgery, remained in ICU, and is now in rehabilitation, gradually regaining movement and speech. AVMs are congenital and often undetected until rupture; recovery varies widely, with many survivors facing lasting deficits. Her family stays hopeful and plans to bring her home as she continues extensive rehab, a process that could take months to over a year.
A long-term study of more than 100,000 women over about 21 years found that closer adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet—rich in fruits, vegetables, beans, fish and olive oil—was linked to an 18% lower risk of any stroke, with a 16% reduction for ischemic (clot-related) strokes and a striking 25% lower risk of hemorrhagic (brain-bleeding) strokes. The association held after adjusting for smoking, physical activity and blood pressure, suggesting diet is linked to better brain health, though causality can’t be proven.
A long-running study of more than 100,000 women over more than 20 years found that strong adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet lowers overall stroke risk by 18%, with a 25% reduction in hemorrhagic stroke risk and a 16% reduction in ischemic stroke risk, suggesting this eating pattern supports brain health by reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation.
A 21-year study of 105,614 California women found that higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet—rich in olive oil, nuts, seafood, whole grains and vegetables—was linked to lower risk of total stroke, including ischemic and hemorrhagic types, with up to a 25% reduction for hemorrhagic stroke; while not proving causation, experts say the findings support dietary approaches to stroke prevention, though limitations include self-reported diet and only female participants.
Statin drugs like rosuvastatin can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, but they also have downsides. It is not low cholesterol that increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, but rather the statin itself. The overall risk of hemorrhagic stroke in people taking statins is low, but individuals with a history of hemorrhagic stroke should carefully consider the use of statins. In such cases, a PCSK9 inhibitor may be a better option. Stopping ezetimibe, which caused muscle cramps, was a reasonable decision. The optimal treatment should be determined by a doctor based on individual risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
Doctors are reminding people to recognize the symptoms of a stroke during National Stroke Awareness Month. The BE FAST acronym stands for balance, eyes, face, arms, speech, and time. If someone has any of those symptoms, it's time to immediately call 911. Strokes can be prevented with a balanced diet, moderate use of alcohol, no tobacco use, blood pressure control, and moderate exercise.
