Backyard discovery uncovers Denmark’s largest Viking Age silver hoard
A private homeowner in northern Denmark, while preparing a new tiled terrace, unearthed what North Jutland Museums call Denmark’s largest Viking Age silver hoard, dating to the 10th century and comprising around 700 objects including ingots, bracelets, coins, and a Thor's hammer. The hoard, found buried in a clay vessel in the Himmerland region, dwarfs the previous record and suggests significant Viking-era wealth and trade in northern Jutland. Under Danish law the hoard belongs to the state and the finder may receive a reward; archaeologists say the find highlights the area’s growing importance to understanding Viking Denmark, especially alongside earlier gold rings found nearby in 2026.
