SpaceX hires former NASA human spaceflight chief for Starship development

Former NASA human spaceflight chief, Kathy Lueders, has been hired by SpaceX as a general manager at the company's Starbase facility in South Texas. Lueders will report directly to SpaceX President and COO, Gwynne Shotwell, and will work on the development of the Starship deep-space transportation system. Lueders is already familiar with SpaceX's operational human spaceflight hardware, having worked with the company to launch multiple astronaut missions to the International Space Station during her time at NASA.

NASA's History-Making Kathy Lueders Announces Retirement

Kathy Lueders, a long-serving engineer and manager for NASA, is retiring effective May 1. Lueders leaves NASA with a long list of accomplishments, including successfully launching the Commercial Crew program, which operates on a fixed-price basis and allows winning companies to sell space transportation services to private customers. Lueders subsequently served as associate administrator of the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate and then associate administrator of the Space Operations Missions Directorate when HEO was split into separate exploration and operations organizations.

NASA's Human Spaceflight Chief Kathy Lueders Announces Retirement

Kathy Lueders, the NASA official responsible for the International Space Station and commercial cargo and crew programs, will retire from the agency at the end of April. Ken Bowersox, who is currently the deputy associate administrator for space operations, will take over her position. Lueders oversaw the successful launch of SpaceX’s Demo-2 mission and was responsible for all NASA human spaceflight efforts, including the Artemis lunar exploration campaign. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson praised Lueders for championing a new way of doing business in low Earth orbit and for pioneering the public-private commercial model that will return humanity to the Moon and prepare for the first crewed missions to Mars.
