"Revisiting Ape Evolution: Leaves, Woodlands, and Prehistoric Timelines"

New research suggests that early apes evolved an upright torso to eat leaves and not fruit in open woodlands. The study, which examined fossils of the oldest documented ape, Morotopithecus, found that the ape's molars were craggy, with peaks and valleys, which are used for tearing fibrous leaves apart. The researchers also found that the apes and other mammals had been eating water-stressed C3 plants that are more common in open woodland or grassy woodland environments today. The findings push back the origin of grassy woodlands from between 7 million and 10 million years ago to 21 million years ago, during the Early Miocene.
