Microsoft Declares WSL Containers Generally Available with New CLI and Enterprise Controls
Microsoft has made Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Containers generally available, allowing users to run Linux containers natively on Windows without third-party software. The release introduces the wslc.exe command-line tool and a programmatic API for Windows applications. Key additions include container restart capabilities, file copying, health checks, and configurable storage. Enterprise features integrate with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Intune for security and registry allow-listing. Microsoft notes that Docker Compose-style support is upcoming, and the feature aims to improve cross-OS file performance by up to 2x.
