NASA tests high-power lithium thruster that could cut Mars travel to months
NASA researchers at JPL tested a lithium-fed, high-power electric thruster at up to 120 kilowatts—far beyond current systems. When paired with a nuclear power source, the technology could reduce one-way Mars travel to about three months and bring the total round trip to roughly two years, though the work is in early testing and would require further demonstrations and integration.
