Norway Uncovers 3,000-Coin Viking Hoard Dating to End of Viking Age

A Viking coin hoard was uncovered in eastern Norway’s Innlandet county after detectorists retrieved 19 silver coins and enlisted archaeologists, who within a week documented more than 3,000 coins. Most coins were minted in Germany and England, with some Norwegian issues after 1045, and they appear exceptionally well-preserved due to the soil. The treasure is believed to have been buried around 1050, linking the find to the end of the Viking Age and shedding light on medieval trade networks.

"Man Unearths Ancient Church Coins 60 Years After Childhood Treasure Hunt"

A Norwegian man revealed that he found medieval coins under Edøy Church as a child and kept them hidden for 60 years. The coins, believed to be from the Middle Ages, were discovered during a "treasure hunt" under the church's floor, which had been used by Nazi soldiers as an ammunition storage during World War II. The collection includes 14 silver coins, three fittings, an amber pearl, and nine needles, with some coins dating back to the thirteenth century. The items have been surrendered to the Norwegian government for preservation under the Cultural Heritage Act.
