NASA's Stunning Astronomy Pictures: Pinwheel Galaxy and Dumbbell Nebula.

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day features stunning snapshots of celestial objects, including the Dumbbell Nebula, Messier 101, and the Milky Way Galaxy over the bioluminescent sea in the Maldives. A computer simulation tracks the formation of our universe, while a snapshot of Cassiopeia A shows a supernova remnant. Messier 101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a massive pinwheel galaxy located about 25 million light-years away towards the Northern constellation of Ursa Major.

Don't Miss These Opportunities to Observe Supernovas from Your Telescope

The Virtual Telescope Project will livestream the newly discovered supernova, SN 2023ixf, which is one of the largest and brightest seen for a decade, on its website and YouTube channel as it develops via its power robotic telescopes based in Rome, Italy. The supernova is located in the galaxy Messier 101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, and can be difficult to view in the night sky without the right conditions or telescope. The supernova should remain visible in the Pinwheel Galaxy for the coming few months before fading away.
