
Decoding Organ Aging: Predicting Disease Risk and Failure
A study has found that measuring organ-specific proteins in plasma can provide insights into the molecular aging of different organs in the human body. By mapping the organ-specific plasma proteome and training machine learning models, researchers were able to estimate the biological age of major organs and identify unique aging profiles for each organ. These organ age gaps were associated with specific age-related diseases, such as metabolic diseases for the kidney age gap and heart diseases for the heart age gap. The study also found that organ age gaps were predictive of future health outcomes, including heart failure and all-cause mortality. These findings highlight the potential of organ-specific plasma proteins as biomarkers for tracking organ aging and assessing disease risk.
