Tom Barkin, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, criticized the unaffordability of housing for many workers, particularly teachers, due to the widening gap between wages and home prices. He highlighted that the median price for a starter home in 2022 was $299,000, while the median salary for middle school teachers was just over $60,000, making homeownership increasingly unattainable. Barkin also addressed the issue of NIMBYism, urging communities to rally together to make the case for housing and improve housing inventory.
