Bat-borne PRV found in Nipah-suspect cases prompts broader surveillance

Bangladesh researchers detected Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV) in archived throat swabs from five patients initially suspected of Nipah virus infection, suggesting bat-borne viruses may co-circulate with Nipah and should be considered in NiV-like illnesses. NiV tests were negative, but sequencing confirmed PRV (and in some cases virus growth in culture). All patients had recently consumed raw date-palm sap, and while two patients recovered, one died and others reported lingering symptoms; findings underscore the potential for reassortment in segmented viruses and call for broader surveillance and differential diagnoses in regions where palm sap is consumed.

"The Big One: Scientists Warn of Catastrophic Pandemic Deadlier Than Covid"

Scientists have identified a paramyxovirus, such as Nipah, as a potential cause for the next global pandemic, which they warn could be far deadlier than Covid-19. Paramyxoviruses, including mumps and measles, are highly infectious and have the ability to mutate and infect humans. The Nipah virus, for example, has a mortality rate of 40-75%, compared to 1% for Covid-19. Experts believe that paramyxoviruses are faster at spreading between humans, making them a significant threat. The World Health Organization has already prioritized Nipah and related viruses as top-priority pathogens. Developing vaccines for paramyxoviruses is challenging due to the high fatality rate among those infected.
