American rower shatters records with solo California-to-Hawaii crossing

Professional rafting guide Kelsey Pfendler completed a solo 2,400-mile crossing from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii in just under 44 days, breaking both the women’s and the overall speed records for the California-to-Hawaii crossing according to Ocean Rowing Society International; she chronicled the journey in video diaries, describing blistered hands, sleep deprivation and challenging currents and winds, and urged others to pursue their own big, hard scary challenges.

Extreme athlete Tom Waddington, while rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, found himself surrounded by over 1,000 whales for hours. Despite initial fear and concern for his boat, Waddington captured the unique and awe-inspiring encounter on video. The whales, identified as long-finned pilot whales, were social and playful. Waddington is raising money for the British mental health charity Mind.
