Nolo set to become major hurricane, threatening Hawaii with record rainfall
Tropical Storm Nolo is forecast to intensify into a major hurricane by Saturday as it passes south of Hawaii’s Big Island. The storm is expected to bring 15 to 20 inches of rain, with isolated totals reaching 35 inches, posing a high risk of catastrophic flooding and mudslides. This marks the third hurricane to impact Hawaii in 2026, an unprecedented event driven by El Niño conditions. Governor Josh Green has ordered closures of schools and government offices on the Big Island and Maui County to allow residents to prepare and keep roads clear for emergency responders.
