A "pneumonia front" is set to bring a sudden chill to Chicago and Milwaukee, with temperatures expected to plummet 20 or more degrees "in a matter of minutes" as the front swings through. Pneumonia fronts are a staple of the Great Lakes and happen a couple of times per year, most commonly in spring when the lake waters are still cold and the air is warm. The term pneumonia front was coined by the Weather Service office in Milwaukee back in the 1960s.

A "pneumonia front" is expected to move through southern and southwest Wisconsin and could drop temperatures anywhere from 20-40 degrees in just a matter of minutes. The term pneumonia front was first coined by the National Weather Service in Milwaukee in the 1960s to identify the rapid changes in temperatures that can come from lake-enhanced cold air coming off of Lake Michigan and into central and southern Wisconsin. The temperature swings will be the most dramatic in communities along Lake Michigan, while Appleton, Sheboygan, and Green Bay may not see severe effects from the front.

Weather Update: Temperatures Drop on Tuesday and Trend Cooler for the Weekend.

Warmer temperatures and more sun expected on Monday, but a drastic change in temperatures is ahead. A cold front unique to the Great Lakes area, known as a Pneumonia Front, will move in on Tuesday, likely dropping temperatures in the afternoon by 15-20 degrees. This is the first of two cold fronts this week, with temperatures on Wednesday only reaching the upper 50s. Thursday will recover to the 70s, but the second cold front moves in on Friday.
