Newhook fuels Canadiens' 5-1 win in Buffalo to even series

Montreal bounced back from Game 1 with a 5-1 road win in Buffalo to even the series at 1-1. Alex Newhook scored twice early, with Mike Matheson adding a third and Jakub Dobeš turning in 29 saves. Zach Benson briefly sparked Buffalo with a late-second-period goal, but Alexandre Carrier and Nick Suzuki capped the win in the third. Montreal dominated five-on-five play and won the faceoff battle 57-43, while Buffalo’s power play again stalled. Ruff indicated the top Buffalo unit’s struggles and hinted at potential goalie shuffling after Lyon’s off night, as well as the possible return of Sam Carrick to boost the draw.

Canadiens Seek Round-2 Momentum in Game 1 Against Sabres

Montreal heads to Buffalo for Game 1 of Round 2, aiming to translate their surprising first-round success into a series-opening edge. They’ll rely on road-tested form and a rekindled power play, facing a Sabres side anchored by veteran goalie Alex Lyon who has posted stellar playoff numbers, while Canadiens rookie Jakub Dobes carries the crease for his team. The teams split a 2-2 regular-season series, and Montreal won’t be skating in the morning as they prepare for puck drop.

Avalanche ride big plays and special teams to take 2-0 series lead

Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 5-2 to take a 2-0 series edge, riding a sharper defense and two timely power-play goals. Minnesota, hampered by injuries including Brodin and the absence of Eriksson Ek, got a shaky playoff return from Gustavsson but couldn’t slow the Avs’ top line or their improving power play, with MacKinnon finishing with multi-point night and Landeskog extending his point streak as Nichushkin added an empty-netter. Wild’s penalty kill remains a major issue, Boldy was held off the scoresheet, and the series shifts to Minnesota for Games 3 and 4 after three days off for adjustments.

From league-leading to playoff-free: Winnipeg Jets' costly missteps

After finishing first last season, the Winnipeg Jets missed the playoffs due to an aging, slower roster, failed attempts to add a second-line center, costly veteran signings that hindered breakout passes and transition, a power play plummeting from No. 1 to the 20s, and goaltending struggles tied to Connor Hellebuyck’s knee surgery, with limited secondary scoring and coaching decisions that didn’t adequately fix top-line overreliance.

Isles on the brink: playoff hopes fade after 3-0 loss to Senators

The New York Islanders fell 3-0 at UBS Arena to the Ottawa Senators, dropping their playoff odds to life support and leaving elimination possible as soon as Sunday. The loss underscored the Isles' ongoing power-play struggles (0-for-5) and lack of offense, with Ridly Greig scoring on a short-handed rush and Jake Sanderson finishing on a five-on-three, capping Ottawa’s victory with an empty-netter as Michael Amadio sealed it.

Dubois leads Caps past Knights as power play stalls

Washington Capitals edged the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 to extend their win streak and stay in the Eastern playoff hunt, highlighted by Pierre-Luc Dubois' two goals and an assist after his return from injury. The Caps’ power play continued to struggle (0-for-5, near the bottom of the league) and their Ovechkin-Strome line posted poor five-on-five metrics, prompting calls for a winger upgrade, while Rasmus Sandin had two assists as Washington improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games since Jan. 23.
