California Court Victory Allows Uber and Lyft to Classify Drivers as Contractors

A California appeals court has ruled that ride-sharing apps, including Uber and Lyft, can continue to classify their drivers as independent contractors, overturning a lower-court decision that barred them from doing so. The ruling upholds Proposition 22, which was approved by California voters in Nov. 2020, and exempts ride-share companies from following certain minimum wage, overtime, or workers compensation laws for hundreds of thousands of Californian rideshare drivers. Shares of Uber, Lyft, and Doordash rose more than 4% after hours on the news.
