From Plastic Slurry to Cookies: SIU's Microbites Move Waste Toward Food

Researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale have developed µBites—cookies produced by converting PET plastic and agricultural waste into a liquid feedstock via oxidative hydrothermal dissolution, then using engineered yeast to create ingredients like proteins, lipids, aromas (vanillin) and colors (beta-carotene) which are 3D-printed into dough and microwaved into cookies. Aimed at near-zero-waste carbon conversion for remote or space environments, the system currently converts about half of feedstock carbon; safety tests are ongoing and human tasting is pending. Microgravity remains a hurdle, but potential uses include disaster relief and on-demand food in extreme conditions.

Trash-to-Treat: Scientists Demo Cookies Made from Recycled Plastic

Researchers unveiled µBites, cookies produced by converting waste PET plastic into a liquid feedstock via oxidative hydrothermal dissolution, then using engineered yeast to synthesize proteins, aromas, and colors, which are 3D-printed into dough and microwaved into cookies. Sensory tests suggest the aroma and texture are promising, but human taste and safety trials are still pending. The project aims for on-site, zero-waste food production in extreme environments (space, disasters), with current conversion around half of the carbon in feedstocks and ongoing work to address microgravity and efficiency.”,

Leaked Renders Reveal Fairphone's Repair-Friendly Over-Ear Headphones.

Fairphone is reportedly set to release its first over-ear headphones, the Fairbuds XL, which feature noise-canceling technology and are made with recycled plastics. The leaked images show black and green color options, a foldable design, and a button or mini joystick on one side. The headphones include USB-C and a LED status light, but no 3.5mm jack. The Fairbuds XL are expected to cost €249 (about $275) and their repairability remains to be seen.

Xbox Launches Eco-Friendly Controller Made from Recycled Materials

Microsoft has announced a new Xbox controller, the "Remix Special Edition", made partly from recycled plastic sourced from leftover Xbox One generation controller parts, plastic water jugs, CDs, and automotive headlight covers. The controller is being released to coincide with Earth Day celebrations and features a unique design due to the mix of colors and particles in the recycled plastic. The controller also ships with Microsoft's Xbox Rechargeable Battery Pack.

3D-Printed Public Pavilion for Extreme Weather by HASSELL & Nagami.

Architecture studio HASSELL, in collaboration with to.org and Nagami, has developed a prototype for a 3D-printed public pavilion made from recycled plastic. The pavilion is inspired by indigenous shelters and can be easily modified to suit a range of extreme climates and settings. The design aims to encourage conversations around material waste and how technology can solve the planet's most urgent problems. The prototype can be easily transported and assembled on-site, with the main structure 3D-printed in 24 separate pieces. The pavilion is highly customizable, low-cost, and climate-adaptive.
