Ukraine’s Fifth School Year Begins Amid Persistent Russian Strikes and Shrinking Enrollment
Ukraine has entered its fifth academic year under Russian military attack, with schools continuing operations despite significant infrastructure damage and a sharp decline in student enrollment. In Kyiv, 318 education facilities have been damaged since the start of the full-scale war, including 156 schools, some of which have been struck multiple times. The city’s first-grade population has dropped by approximately 40%, falling from 28,500 students in September 2022 to 16,600 this year. Nationally, the total school population has decreased by 17.5%, or over 755,000 children, since the 2021-22 school year. Many schools now operate in basements or rely on online learning due to safety concerns, while others have merged or closed due to low attendance. Experts warn that these disruptions are causing long-term learning losses and could impact the future workforce and economy.
