Mile-deep signal sparks renewed dark-matter hunt at South Dakota lab

Scientists at the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, recorded a single anomalous event in a 10-tonne xenon detector that could be a dark-matter interaction. While it appeared where dark matter might show up and background signals are unusually low, researchers stress the finding is not conclusive and will require more data. The study analyzed 220 days of data from March 2023 to April 2024, with an estimated 0.5% chance the event is explained by known backgrounds; if similar events accumulate, the case for dark matter could strengthen, otherwise it may prompt new explanations.
