DC-area schools surge in US News rankings as methodology shifts impact other states

U.S. News and World Report released its 2026-2027 Best High Schools rankings, evaluating nearly 18,000 public schools. In the Washington, D.C. area, School Without Walls jumped to fifth nationally, while Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology ranked sixth. The rankings use six indicators, with college readiness carrying the highest weight at 30%. However, the methodology faced scrutiny in New York, where a lack of Advanced Placement data caused significant ranking drops for some schools.

Playtime Pays Off: Kids Who Game Often Shine Academically

A Columbia University study of 3,195 children aged 6–11 found that those who played video games more than five hours per week had higher odds of strong intellectual functioning (1.75x) and greater overall school competence (1.88x) after adjusting for demographics. They were also more socially integrated with peers and had fewer relationship problems, with no significant increase in mental health issues. Experts caution against overinterpreting the findings and emphasize moderating screen time, but the study suggests gaming may confer cognitive and social benefits that merit further investigation.

Missouri Schools Struggle with Learning Loss and Attendance Decline

More than half of Missouri's charter school systems and one in six school districts fail to meet state standards for accreditation, according to new data. The annual performance reports, which measure factors such as standardized test scores and graduation rates, show that Missouri school districts and charters scored an average of 77%, down from 96% in 2018. Low teacher retention and student absenteeism were cited as main factors affecting school performance. The data indicate a need for academic recovery, and discussions around school choice policies and the popularity of four-day school weeks are expected to dominate the next legislative session.

Decline in Five-Star Schools Revealed in Baltimore's Top Districts

The latest Maryland School Report Card reveals a significant drop in the number of five-star schools in three of the highest-performing districts in the Baltimore area. While Baltimore City saw an increase in the number of five-star schools, Baltimore County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, and Carroll County all experienced declines. The Department of Education attributes the decline in scores to chronic absenteeism, which was scored differently last year due to the pandemic. However, the number of one-star schools in the state decreased, indicating some improvement.
