Neutron imaging reveals Scotty, the largest T. rex, died from a rib injury in a dinosaur fight
Scientists used neutron imaging at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to examine Scotty, the 43-foot, 19,500-pound Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton found in Saskatchewan in 1991, preserving tissue on the bone. 3D images showed Scotty died from a cracked rib sustained during a fight with another dinosaur, with mineralised blood vessels around the wound indicating a healing response that wasn’t enough to save him. The researchers hope these methods will unlock more prehistoric secrets.
