Delhi’s 25-Year Power Grid Overhaul: From 50% Losses to 99.9% Reliability
Delhi’s power distribution system has undergone a massive transformation over the last 25 years, reducing electricity losses from over 50% in 2002 to just 5-6% in 2026. This improvement, which brings the city’s grid reliability to 99.9%, was achieved through a combination of technical upgrades, such as replacing bare overhead wires with insulated cables and installing smart meters, and organizational reforms, including the privatization of distribution utilities and the implementation of real-time monitoring systems. The success of this project offers a model for other cities facing similar infrastructure challenges.
