Southern Indian Ocean Freshening Could Redraw Global Climate Currents

New research shows the Southern Indian Ocean has become dramatically less salty over six decades, with salinity down about 30% due to wind-driven freshwater inflows from the Indo-Pacific pool. The resulting lighter, less dense water weakens deep ocean mixing, potentially disrupting the global thermohaline circulation and altering climate patterns beyond the region, with possible impacts on marine ecosystems.

Unusual Ocean Cloud Formations Spotted near Canary Islands

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have captured images of chevron-shaped wave clouds over the southern Indian Ocean, around the Crozet Islands. These clouds are formed due to atmospheric internal waves, which are fluctuations in the air formed when air moves over areas of higher ground, being forced upwards, before being pulled down again by gravity. The Crozet Islands are uninhabited apart from numerous seals, penguins, and sea birds, as well as a few research stations.
