H5N1 Bird Flu Kills Thousands of Sub‑Antarctic Seal Pups, Traced to Crozet Islands

A deadly H5N1 bird flu outbreak has killed an estimated 13,000 southern elephant seal pups on Heard Island and McDonald Island, with a 76% mortality rate across about 17,000 births; several hundred adult king penguins have also died. Genetic data suggest the virus arrived from the French Crozet Islands around August 2025 and has been spreading eastward through sub‑Antarctic wildlife, a finding reported in BioRxiv (not yet peer‑reviewed).

"Gravity Waves Create Perfect Cloud Ripples Over Remote Islands"

An astronaut aboard the International Space Station captured a photo of two perfectly aligned wave clouds above the Crozet Islands in the Southern Ocean. These wave clouds, formed by air oscillating over island mountains, are rare and more commonly found over large bodies of water. The Crozet Islands are uninhabited except for a small research station studying local wildlife.

Unusual Ocean Cloud Formations Spotted near Canary Islands

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have captured images of chevron-shaped wave clouds over the southern Indian Ocean, around the Crozet Islands. These clouds are formed due to atmospheric internal waves, which are fluctuations in the air formed when air moves over areas of higher ground, being forced upwards, before being pulled down again by gravity. The Crozet Islands are uninhabited apart from numerous seals, penguins, and sea birds, as well as a few research stations.
