Two Simple Fitness Tests Under a Minute Signal How Well You're Aging
A Taiwan study of 13,423 adults aged 65+ found that higher fitness across balance, strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory health is linked to lower all-cause mortality. The standout tests were the 8-foot up‑and‑go (59% lower mortality risk) and the 1-leg stance (50% lower risk); additional tests like chair stands and a 2-minute step also reduced risk, and a composite score across seven assessments yielded about a 61% lower mortality risk for top performers. The findings are observational and fitness was measured at a single point, but they suggest maintaining balance, strength, and cardio supports healthier aging.
