Unveiling the Appearance of Ticks and Tips to Avoid Their Bites

Ticks are parasitic arachnids that can carry diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They come in various species, with hard ticks having a hard shell and soft ticks being larger and raisin-like in shape. Ticks can be grayish-white, brown, black, reddish-brown, or yellow in color. Tick bites resemble mosquito bites and may leave a small, red bump. If a rash resembling a bull's-eye or target appears, it could be an early sign of Lyme disease. Ticks do not fly or jump but find hosts by "questing" and detecting body heat, moisture, vibrations, breath, and body odors.

Tick Trivia: Test Your Knowledge

Tick-borne diseases are on the rise, with reported cases in the US increasing from about 12,000 annually in 1995 to approximately 35,000 in 2019. There are more than 20 known tick species in Michigan, and some of them can carry dangerous bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Common tick species in Michigan include the American dog tick, blacklegged tick, lone star tick, woodchuck tick, and brown dog tick. Ticks go through four life stages and need to feed on blood at each stage to survive. To prevent tick bites, the CDC recommends using EPA-registered insect repellents, avoiding wooded and brushy areas, checking for ticks after spending time outdoors, and showering within two hours of coming indoors. If you find a tick, it's important to remove it safely and have it identified if possible. Lyme disease, red meat allergy (Alpha-gal Syndrome), and anaplasmosis are among the tick-borne diseases discussed in the article.
