CNN tracks a potentially historic January 2026 winter storm across hundreds of miles, forecasting heavy snow (roughly 6–12 inches with pockets over a foot), dangerous ice buildup, and bitterly cold temperatures that could trigger travel disruptions and power outages as the system moves from Friday into early next week, with maps and charts updating as new data arrive.
The total solar eclipse occurring today is the first widespread one in the Lower 48 states since 2017 and the last until 2044. Weather maps are being used to track cloud and rain conditions, with temperature drops of 5 to 15 degrees expected in the path of totality. Additionally, the "eclipse wind" phenomenon may cause winds to lighten as the moon covers more of the sun. Rocket Lab's Electron launched twice in two weeks to deliver the TROPICS constellation, containing four CubeSats, to orbit. The constellation will monitor tropical systems forming in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, performing scans about once every hour, an upgrade over current weather tracking satellites. The CubeSats carry a high-performance radiometer that will be able to see inside the structure of tropical systems through the tops of the clouds, including high-resolution scans of the eyewall.
