Price hikes pull console sales down in May as PS5 and Xbox crumble, Switch 2 leads
Circana’s May video-game hardware report shows PlayStation 5 down 58% year over year and Xbox Series hardware down 12% as rising prices bite demand; overall hardware spending rose 38% driven by Nintendo Switch 2, with average new-console prices at $502 (PS5 $672, Xbox Series $524). Nintendo Switch 2 remains the top seller, while Microsoft announced August 1, 2026 price hikes that will push Series X to $749.99 and Series S to $499.99.
