Shingrix May Help Heart Health, Study Suggests

An observational study of more than 70,000 adults 60+ found that those who received the Shingrix shingles vaccine had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and stroke compared with those who got the older Zostavax vaccine, including about 9% longer cardiovascular disease-free time and 12% lower heart disease risk (and a 12% lower stroke risk in men). The study shows association, not causation, but researchers say preventing shingles may reduce vascular inflammation and immune activation; the vaccine’s AS01 adjuvant could play a role. Experts stress continuing established heart-healthy practices and note only about 42% of eligible adults are vaccinated, with access and cost issues influencing uptake.

Old Drugs, New Hope: 3 Meds May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s

A panel of researchers identified three approved medicines with potential to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease: the shingles vaccine (Zostavax), sildenafil (Viagra), and riluzole. These drugs target relevant Alzheimer’s mechanisms, have safety profiles suitable for older adults, and show promising results in cell/animal studies, prompting calls for robust clinical trials to determine true benefit and establish whether they can slow or prevent dementia.
