"Unprecedented Trillion Cicada Emergence Forecasted for 2024"
TL;DR
Billions of cicadas are set to emerge this spring in a rare "double brood emergence" as two different broods, one appearing every 13 years and the other every 17 years, coincide. The insects, known as periodical cicadas, are harmless but will produce loud mating calls and cover trees with exoskeletons. The emergence, expected in parts of the Midwest and Southeast, is a unique natural phenomenon that scientists are studying to understand its impact on climate change.
