Cosmic Catastrophe: Massive Black Hole Shatters Star, Scattering Debris Across the Universe

Astronomers have observed a tidal disruption event (TDE) named ASASSN-14li, where a massive star was ripped apart by a supermassive black hole. The event emitted powerful X-rays and ultraviolet light, allowing astronomers to analyze the composition of the star. By comparing the spectra of the captured material and the gases that streamed away, the team confirmed that the star had a mass of about 3 Suns. This event provides valuable insights into the behavior of stars near supermassive black holes and may help understand the clustering of stars around these black holes in other galaxies.
