Cosmic Clash: Black Holes Tear Galaxies Apart

The Gemini South telescope has captured an image of NGC 7727, the aftermath of a collision between two spiral galaxies. This image not only reveals the fate of our Milky Way galaxy but also showcases the closest pair of supermassive black holes ever recorded. The chaotic mess of stars and nebulas in NGC 7727 is caused by the gravitational tug-of-war between the two black holes, with one being 6.3 million times the mass of the sun and the other as massive as 154 million suns. Scientists predict that these black holes will merge in about 250 million years, producing gravitational waves. NGC 7727 provides a glimpse into the future of our own galaxy, which will eventually merge with the Andromeda galaxy in about 4 billion years.
