Counting the Cosmos: The Vast Number of Planets in the Universe

Astronomers have discovered 5,502 planets beyond our solar system, known as exoplanets, in the Milky Way galaxy. When combined with the eight planets in our solar system, there are currently 5,510 known planets in our galaxy. However, this number is just an estimate, as there are likely many more planets yet to be discovered. Astronomers believe that there is roughly one planet for every star, meaning that our galaxy, which has around 100 billion stars, likely has a similar number of planets. When considering the vastness of the universe, with potentially trillions of galaxies, the estimated number of planets in the universe is around 100 sextillion. The search for life on other planets continues, but astronomers will have to wait for the next generation of space telescopes to make significant progress in this area.
