Declining Discovery: JWST Observations Reveal Scarce Early Massive Galaxies

Initial observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) seemed to challenge our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe, as they found large, bright, and already structured galaxies. However, a new study using data from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS) suggests that the double-break selection method used to identify these galaxies can introduce a bias towards larger and brighter galaxies. This indicates that the initial results may not be as revolutionary as initially thought, highlighting the need for more data and observations to determine the true nature of early galaxies and potentially revise our cosmological model.
