A new calculation by eclipse expert John Irwin suggests that the path of totality for Monday's solar eclipse is 600 yards narrower than previously estimated, affecting areas like Rome, New York; Effingham, Illinois; and Montreal’s Cité Jardin park, which are now just out of the zone. NASA confirms the discrepancy and advises people on the edge to travel a mile or so into the zone to guarantee they see the total eclipse. The cause of the discrepancy is disagreements about the size of the sun. Proper eyewear like eclipse glasses is necessary to view the event safely. Despite the change, major US cities like Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Buffalo are still in the center of the path and will see nearly four minutes of complete darkness.
