"Multiple Near-Earth Asteroids Make Close Flybys, Prompting NASA Alert"

A car-sized asteroid, named 2024 GJ2, was discovered on Tuesday and made a close pass by Earth on Thursday, coming within 12,298 kilometers (7,641 miles) of the planet, which is just three percent of the distance between Earth and the moon. The asteroid, measuring between 2.5 and 5 meters (8.2 and 16 feet), posed no threat and would have burned up in Earth's atmosphere if its orbit intersected ours more directly. This close approach won't happen again until 2093, when the asteroid is estimated to pass at a distance of 205,947 kilometers (127,970 miles). NASA has cataloged nearly 35,000 near-Earth asteroids to date, with very few posing any threat to the planet.
