The Milky Way galaxy, our cosmic home, is a typical example of a somewhat mature, larger-than-average but not among the largest galaxies in the Universe. It has evolved over 13.8 billion years through the merging of smaller proto-galaxies, leading to its current spiral structure and ongoing star formation. The Milky Way is surrounded by globular clusters, contains a tremendous amount of gas and dust, and is still evolving, with future mergers expected, including one with the Andromeda galaxy in approximately 4 billion years.
